Botanical gardens are often spaces for the community and allow for diverse, ecological systems to flourish. Not only can they serve as a biosphere for organisms, but they also filter and store water in urban landscapes.

The Bellevue Botanical garden also has a “rain garden”, which allows rainwater runoff from impervious urban areas to be absorbed. Rain gardens improve water quality in nearby bodies of water and allow the water to be available to the plants instead of going directly to storm drains. Rain gardens can reduce the amount of rain runoff by allowing the storm water to soak into the ground and can decrease pollution reaching nearby bodies of water by 30%!
