Emilie du Chatelet grew up in France in a time when it took much convincing to prove to her father her place was in academic rather than in finding a husband. A family friend, M. de Mezieres, recognized her talents with math and encouraged her pursuits. Rather than leaving her work when she married and had children, she continued her passion and even began working with tutors in her area that would help with her studies.
