Josephine Yates a chemist and educator. She was one of the first black teachers hired at Lincoln University and the first black woman to head a college science department, and may have been the first black woman to serve as a professor at any U.S. college. Josephine was a fierce advocate for African-American women, serving as the first president of the Women’s League of Kansas City and the second president of the National Association of Colored Women.
